In zones 8 and below, plant hibiscus in a container.The container should have good drainage. Bring them inside the home for the colder months of the year. Plant in organically rich, well-draining soil in a sunny spot protected from strong winds. Cut back by about half in early spring to maintain a nice shape and encourage new growth. Fertilize every two weeks during spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer, or use a slow-release formula following label instructions.
