Clusia rosea

clusia

Also known as: Autograph Tree, Pitch Apple, Balsam Apple, Copey

Native to the Caribbean and Central America, Clusia is one of the toughest and most versatile plants you can grow. Its thick, glossy leaves are so tough you can scratch words or drawings into them — and the marks stay visible for the entire life of the leaf, earning it the fun nickname "Autograph Tree." Salt tolerant, drought tolerant, and equally happy as a hedge or a standalone tree, it's as hardworking as it is beautiful.

Water regularly until established, then reduce to as needed. Once mature, Clusia is highly drought tolerant and handles dry spells with ease.

  • light

Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Adapts well to a wide range of light conditions.

  • size

Grows 25–30 ft. tall as a tree and can be kept much smaller as a hedge or shrub with regular pruning.

care

Plant in well-draining soil in a sunny spot and water regularly until established. Once mature, Clusia needs very little attention — no regular fertilizing or pruning required to stay healthy.
