Also known as: Cape Leadwort, Cape Plumbago, Sky Flower, Blue Plumbago

Native to the warm, sunny regions of South Africa, Plumbago is one of the most beloved flowering shrubs in warm climate gardens. Its clusters of delicate, five-petaled blue flowers bloom almost non-stop from spring through fall and are a favorite of butterflies, especially the Cassius blue butterfly which uses Plumbago as a host plant. Salt tolerant, drought tolerant, and virtually care-free once established.

  • zone

  • size

Grows 5–7 ft. tall and up to 10 ft. wide — fast growing and easy to keep compact with regular pruning.

care

Plant in fertile, well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a sunny spot. Water regularly until established then reduce as needed. Feed once in spring with a balanced fertilizer to support healthy growth and abundant blooms. Cut back hard in late winter to encourage fresh new growth for the coming season. Can also be trained on a trellis for a climbing effect — just tie the stems as they grow.
