Crossandra infundibuliformis

crossandra

Also known as: Firecracker Flower, Orange Marmalade Plant

Native to the tropical regions of India and Sri Lanka, Crossandra's blossoms are so prized there that they are traditionally combined with jasmine to adorn women's hair. Its nickname "Firecracker Flower" comes from its seed pods which literally explode when they get wet, shooting seeds in every direction — one of nature's most clever tricks. Its cheerful salmon, orange, and yellow blooms appear almost non-stop from spring through fall above glossy, deep green leaves, making it one of the longest-blooming plants you can grow.

plant tips

  • Column

Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy — water whenever the top inch feels dry. Never let it dry out completely as this slows blooming significantly.

  • light

Thrives in bright indirect light to partial shade. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch the delicate blooms and foliage.

  • size

Grows about 2 ft. tall and wide.

care

Plant in well-draining, fertile soil and keep in a warm, humid spot. Water regularly and feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during spring and summer to keep blooms coming strong. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming. In cooler climates bring indoors before temperatures drop below 55°F — it will keep blooming happily on a bright windowsill all winter long.
