Calathea ornata 'Beauty Star'

calathea beauty star

Also known as: Beauty Star Prayer Plant, Pinstripe Calathea, Decorated Basket Plant

Native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia and Venezuela, Calathea Beauty Star has one of the most fascinating daily routines in the plant world — its leaves actually rise in the morning and fold down at night like hands in prayer, earning the entire family the nickname "prayer plants." Its name comes from the Greek word for basket, as local communities in the Amazon have used Calathea leaves for centuries to weave baskets and wrap food.

  • zone

    Houseplant.

  • size

Grows 1–2 ft. tall and 1–2 ft. wide.

care

Calathea Beauty Star loves warmth and humidity — mist leaves regularly or place near a humidifier for best results. Keep away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents and maintain temperatures between 65–85°F. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry and feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer from spring through fall. Remove any yellowing leaves at the base to keep the plant looking its best year-round.
