Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian'

aralia fabian

Also known as: Fabian Stump, Plum Aralia, Dinner Plate Aralia

Aralia Fabian is a distinctive tropical houseplant with a strong, architectural look. Its thick, woody stems are lined with round, glossy green leaves that emerge with reddish tones and reveal rich purple coloring underneath. Native to the tropical Pacific region, this indoor Aralia grows upright and full, bringing height, texture, and a polished tropical feel to living rooms, offices, entryways, and other bright indoor spaces. It prefers bright indirect light and warm conditions and can be pruned to help maintain its shape as it grows.

plant tips

  • water

Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again — water about once every 5–7 days and never let it sit in standing water.

  • light

Prefers bright but indirect light — a few feet from a south or west-facing window is ideal. Tolerates lower light but grows best with consistent brightness.

  • zone

    Houseplant.

  • mature size

    Approx. 36" W × 72" H

care

Keep warm at all times — at least 65°F is preferred, and it's happiest at 80°F. Temperatures below 60°F should be avoided. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry and mist leaves regularly to maintain humidity. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during spring and summer. Trim long, thin stems just above a leaf node to encourage bushier, fuller growth and wipe leaves occasionally to keep them looking their best.
