Alocasia odora × Alocasia reginula

alocasia regal shields

Also known as: Regal Shield Elephant Ear, Black Velvet Elephant Ear

A true showstopper born from two very different parents — one from Southeast Asia, one from the jungles of Borneo. Regal Shields inherited the best of both worlds: the bold, upright size of its mother and the dramatic deep purple coloring of its father. Its large, heart-shaped leaves are deep glossy green on top and rich purple underneath — a two-tone look that turns heads from every angle. One of the easiest and most adaptable Alocasias you can have.

plant tips

  • water

Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy — water when the top inch feels dry and always ensure good drainage. Water less in cooler months.

  • light

Thrives in bright to medium indirect light. Tolerates partial shade — keep away from direct sun which can scorch its leaves.

  • size

Grows up to 9 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide.

care

Plant in well-draining, rich soil and keep in a warm, humid spot away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents. Water regularly during spring and summer and reduce in winter. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Wipe large leaves with a damp cloth occasionally to keep their deep, glossy color looking its best year-round.
