Agave lophantha Quadricolor

agave quadricolor variegated

Also known as: Variegated Four-Color Agave, Yellow-Edge Quadricolor, Variegated Century Plant

Same bold DNA as the classic Quadricolor — but with the volume turned up. This standout variant takes the four-color leaf pattern and adds broader, more dramatic yellow variegation along the edges, making each rosette look like it's glowing from within. Native to northeastern Mexico, it shares the same tough, drought-tolerant nature as its parent but delivers an even more eye-catching display in containers, borders, and rock gardens.

plant tips

  • water

Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Extremely drought tolerant once established.

  • light

Full sun to partial shade. More direct sunlight intensifies the yellow variegation and brings out the most vivid color contrast.

  • size

Grows up to 18 in. tall and 2 ft. wide — compact, manageable, and perfect for containers.

care

Plant in sandy, well-drained soil in a sunny spot and water regularly until established. Once mature, no pruning or fertilizing needed to keep it looking sharp. Over time it produces small offshoots called "pups" at its base that can be removed to grow new plants or left to form a colorful cluster. Note that its leaf tips and edges are sharp — plant away from high foot traffic areas.
