agave americana

agave americana

Also known as: Century Plant, Maguey, American Aloe

Native to the arid deserts of Mexico and the southwestern United States, Agave americana has been used by humans for over 8,000 years. Despite its nickname, the Century Plant doesn't actually take 100 years to bloom — after 10–30 years it sends up a dramatic flower stalk reaching up to 30 feet tall in one final, spectacular show. Bold, architectural, and virtually indestructible, this drought-tolerant succulent is a true statement plant for any landscape.

plant tips

  • water

Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry — every few weeks in summer, even less in cooler months.

  • light

Full sun lover — needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to truly thrive. The more sun, the better.

  • size

Grows up to 6 ft. tall and 10 ft. wide at full maturity — give it plenty of space to make its statement.

care

Plant Agave americana in sandy, well-drained soil and water regularly until fully established. Once mature, this tough succulent needs no pruning or extra feeding — though a balanced fertilizer in spring, summer, and fall will keep it looking its best. After several years, the plant grows small offshoots called "pups" at its base, which can be removed to grow new plants or left in place to create a bold, eye-catching grouping. Truly one of the easiest plants you can grow.

  • patio showstopper

Place Agave Americana in an oversized pot to create a bold, architectural centerpiece. Its striking rosette shape and sharp, blue-green leaves add a modern, desert-inspired feel to any outdoor space.

  • grand entrance

A pair of Agave Americana in large pots flanking your front entrance makes an instant statement. Their bold, sculptural shape adds dramatic curb appeal that looks striking year-round with zero effort.
